The Poseidon Adventure plot

"Hell, upside down."

The Poseidon is a luxurious ship of gigantic proportions, making her final voyage from New York to a Greek ship graveyard. The owners want to save as much money as possible and put pressure on the captain to arrive at their destination as quickly as possible, something the engines of the old ship can no longer handle. During the New Year celebrations, the inevitable happens. A huge tidal wave capsizes the ship, leaving countless dead and injured. Ten survivors then embark on a grueling escape from the rapidly sinking ship.

The level is the same as The Towering Inferno, but I saw that it was only made two years later. So this is a nice stepping stone to The Towering Inferno. The Poseidon Adventure is also well put together and partly based on truth, only that real ship did not completely sink. The techniques for that time look good and it is funny to know that water was water and fire was fire. No CGI techniques at that time. In fact, there is a scene where the boy is fetched by (Gene Hackman) where it almost went wrong because the water kept rising. The fire wasn't a fake either. The beautiful fall in the beginning was perhaps the most beautiful stunt in the film. Shelley Winters' swim was also real (had swimming lessons from Johnny Weissmuller), she said in the extras. Okay the screaming was maybe a bit over the top, the tension is good, led by Gene Hackman who plays a great role here again. Many actors are no longer alive, but almost all have become very old. The boy and her sister are still 89 years old, just like Gene Hackman. January 30, even 90.

The song (The morning after) in the film has won another award. Of course sung by another singer Maureen McGovern who is also still in our midst.

The extras show how the film was made. Definitely worth a look.

Movie 4.0

Blu-ray 4.5

Sound 4.5

Extras 5.0

I'm going to make it easy for myself and say that I agree with the review of Theunissen. I didn't expect it, but I thoroughly enjoyed this disaster film. Effects are nice for the time, it's quite exciting at times and nice cast. I too had a soft spot for the young Pamela Sue Martin. I also thought Shelley Winters was strong with a fierce scene towards the end, it was a bit of a swallow.
