He knows how to put down those shoot-outs wonderfully, that Woo. Don't know a better one in that area. Also a pity about the too much smeared story, the acting is too sad for me as far as I'm concerned. Epic role by Yun-Fat Chow by the way. I'm looking forward to part 2.

Hmm, I thought those action scenes were very clumsy. Perhaps the standard for the mid-eighties, but these days I don't get excited about it anymore. Certainly not if affected persons continue to shock for seconds, because of new hits. A Better Tomorrow is a film that actually failed to captivate me. I wouldn't call it bad either, but I couldn't keep my focus on it. The story didn't bother me, the characters didn't interest me and the sound didn't help either. I don't get the fuss about this movie. John Woo has made much better movies.

Practice video for John Woo who had clearly gone down the road to The Killer with this product and just needed some fine tuning. I had already found parts 2 and 3 last year at the thrift store and because of the names Woo and Chow Yun Fat I took it on the gamble. It took until last September to come across Part 1. A Better Tomorrow is seen in Asia itself as a top film, pioneer in the Heroic Bloodshed film genre and even came in second place of the best Chinese films ever. Something that is quite understandable when one peeks between the overacting and melodrama and sees the fantastic action. It's all a bit over the top at times, but that's part of the genre.

Unfortunately, A Better Tomorrow has just as bad sound quality as The Killer, something that especially avenges itself during the shootings that almost hurt your ears. Nevertheless, it's all about the beautiful fight in the apartment with the family, the great shooting in the restaurant with Chow Yun Fat and a few more incidents plus the final shoot out and a Chow Yun Fat who seems completely in his element. It is the drama that regularly takes the momentum out of the film, but especially the soggy music and contrasting classical music that takes the level to overdramatic/melodrama. Something that is not insurmountable, but the balance in that area is hard to find.

It makes A Better Tomorrow something classic that is not necessarily very good but does have a certain vibe about it. Something you just have to feel. Then I only have to ask what kind of dragon of a remake they delivered in 2010 because it doesn't score the best marks. Really looking forward to part 2 now.
