Vertical Limit

Nice disaster movie around the mountain K2. The many scenes in the snow look beautiful and the ascent of the mountain is well captured. The problem is that this makes it a bit tedious. You have seen the many climbing scenes at some point, and that something always goes wrong is almost a running gag. The switch between the people who are stuck in a cliff, and the climbers who want to get them out, provides some variety. The actors are interchangeable, although Scott Glenn has a nice role as old hand.

Mediocre.

The first scenes actually set the tone: serious drama that is portrayed in such a bombastic way, including bad acting, that it makes you laugh. Where one gets such opening scenes: it's a mystery to me, but I certainly had a good laugh. Those scenes also immediately give the film a 90s atmosphere, although the film was released in 2000.

Martin Campbell is of course a director who was successful at the time, so I can imagine his choices. As the film develops further, and the rescue mission is in full swing, you will also see that he can make an action-packed film. Vertical Limit has it all: expansive helicopter shots of the mountains, Bill Paxton and Scott Glenn in key roles and a high over-the-top feel. So the film can entertain on the most important things. There are still a number of terrible shortcomings, such as that acting by mainly Robin Tunney, and then the film ends up somewhere in the gray middle bracket.

2.5

A few exciting scenes save the movie a bit, but I thought it was mostly a silly movie.

-People are going to haunt 8000 m without oxygen bottles...

-A man without toes (Scott Glenn) is going to climb just as hard...

-Ridiculous helicopter drop ever...

-A rescue crew takes nitroglycerin to rescue others, unaware that nitro will explode when heated under the sun (or any other heat source).

I'd rather not see this rescue team coming. Just about everything that isn't mountaineering is covered here.. I was annoyed by this film.
