The Rock plot
"Alcatraz. Only one man has ever broken out. Now five million lives depend on two men breaking in."
A group of Marines occupies the island of Alcatraz with a mountain of chemical weapons. They're demanding $100 million to make up for the families of dead soldiers. If there is no payment, 15 rockets with the deadly VX gas will be sent to San Francisco. A team, including weapons expert Stanley Goodspeed and former Alcatraz inmate John Mason, is deployed to prevent the attacks.

With the death of Sean Connery you can hardly watch his films on TV these days. It's great that at the age of 65 he wanted to lend himself to such an energetic film. Immediately one of Bay's best. He throws together a lot of elements that are typical of the best action movies : a great terrorist threat, two opposing guys who have to join forces, bombastic shit music, the drama moment in the middle of the film where all hopes collapse, the hard-hearted resistance, exciting deadlines, a final where it is undecided until the last minute. All components of annoying formula work, were it not for the fact that it is in good hands. I watched the film in one breath and enjoyed the good action (eg with those mine carts). Cage when he still landed top roles and Connery phlegmatic as ever. I also like to see Ed Harris play, especially when he plays the bad guy. Very solid film, yes, but quite a dime a dozen, so not a high rating and not a favorite. I liked it better than the first time, but that was probably because I was more busy with my then girlfriend in the cinema

The Rock a film that clearly shows that a director like Michael Bay is way ahead of his time. The cinematography is stunning. When you watch a film twenty years later, it seems as if the film fits into that list.

Revisited today, a true action spectacle remains full of excitement and a lot of action, especially the last hour a lot happens as they enter Alcatraz.
Very good roles from Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage, also a great ending!
