A film about witches, not always a success formula in film history. Especially if you have a lack of fantasy like in this Last Witch Hunter. Vin Diesel is good in this role, although he has already done much better. A role that is more reminiscent of Highlander. For a movie about witches, there are few real witches to see. Rare magic tricks, where the focus is more on a battle between the good and the bad. There you immediately see that the story is quite thin, even for this genre. Here and there some nice scenes and enough entertainment not to turn off the film early, but there is nothing more in it.

fun.

I usually don't like Hollywood fantasy, I don't really know why I wanted to make an exception for this one. Was on my Netflix list, so I watched it too. Perhaps because of the lead role of Diesel, who often chooses nice genre films.

Diesel himself is just a miscast, but he has proven his worth. The rest of the cast isn't great either, Caine taking on a nonsensical side part, Wood better off staying off the screen, Leslie being pretty invisible.

Fortunately, for a film like this, that doesn't matter much. What I particularly liked was the decoration, the monster design, pace and cinematography. It has simply become a pretty glitzy genre film, which does not waste too much time on stupid plot details and deepening characters, but does invest time in brightening up the fantasy and also dares to come up with more original designs.

It's a bit of a shame that this even flopped, but it's not surprising. Anyway, I had a good time with it.

3.5*

Nice.

Diesel apparently wanted to play a different kind of character in this movie than his usual roles. That didn't work out, as far as I'm concerned he plays exactly the same character here as in every other Diesel film. Only this time in a film with a different environment than his action films.

This is my second viewing experience with Eisner, but he doesn't have a big career yet. I didn't know what to expect from this 90 million dollar film. Luckily it didn't disappoint me, to be honest it wasn't too bad.

The film manages to surprise, especially in the visual area. It all looks very nice. Monster design is okay, environments are nicely animated and the CGI is definitely above average for a Hollywood movie. You don't see it like this often anymore. The film does grab onto the CGI very quickly and easily.

Another criticism is that the film takes such a drunken story so seriously, which is also the hindrance in the film. Taking such an idiotic story as this so seriously. Not an ounce of humor, not even a corny one-liner. It lacks some airiness and freshness. There are some boring parts here and there.

Acting is okay. Diesel is doing what he does best, and Leslie isn't doing it wrong either. I thought Caine was a bit discarded, and Wood unfortunately doesn't convince either. The villainous role of Engelbrecht also does not work miracles unfortunately. In general it is all doable, but it is not brilliant.

The film is also a bit on the long side, as it just contains a conveyor belt of clichés. It is mainly the CGI that makes the film worth watching, because there is not much else to see. A story that moves very quickly, but does not bring anything new. I'd rather see something more unique, and I assume the audience would rather see a sequel to that than this. Anyway, the producers only think about money, so that puts you at a disadvantage.
