The Hunter plot

Ralph 'Daddy' Thorson is tasked with tracking down people who flee while out on bail. Sometimes this is easy for him, and sometimes a lot less so, sometimes causing violence or even death. This makes Thorson wonder what he's been doing with his life.

Reasonable film about a bounty hunter who tracks down people on the run to collect money. There is hardly any story or plot and because of this the film comes across as somewhat fragmented. Reasonably entertaining and also a number of nice action scenes (whereby the long chase is by far the best scene in the film). Steve McQueen is not entirely at home during the scenes with his pregnant girlfriend. A small 3.0 stars.

The last film with Steve McQueen before he died of cancer ... A partly biographical film about bounty hunter Ralph "Papa'' Thorson. It is a bit of everything: some humor, relationship drama, action, police film ... and it feels even more like a true 70s film in every way. The story is not very thick: you see Thorson carrying out some of his assignments and in between he returns home to his pregnant wife. He does not really see fatherhood and in fact the man gives a slightly autistic impression due to his lack of any human emotion and warmth. The few action scenes are very worthwhile: the one with the combine harvester has a comical content but the long one of almost 15 minutes (!) is truly worthy of James Bond.

In itself a nice attempt by McQueen to play something other than the inscrutable cool hero: now he is socially awkward, bad behind the wheel, provided with reading glasses, in a strange home situation with poker guests every night without him being there, with an aversion to puffing and to top it all off faints when his wife goes into labor – that's a bit too cheesy for my taste. On the other hand, there are also some nice action scenes (especially the chases in the cornfield ("The dynamite!" "What dynamite?"), on the street and in the train, and ultimately that results in more of a series of sketches and loose scenes than a story with a plot, but somehow that doesn't bother me, maybe because McQueen is actually worth watching in any capacity. Half action, half comedy without it becoming an action comedy; a somewhat uncomfortable and very strange mix that is still easy to watch (because it is directed with verve) and does not leave a bitter taste in the mouth afterwards, as I actually expected based on the reputation of this last film by an icon.
