Finally saw it on the big screen last night in the CINEMATEKbe, what an experience! I always thought this was a fairly genius (and prophetic) allegory for the Bush-Cheney years, but on 35mm this visionary work by Verhoeven surprisingly worked on an emotional level as well. The characters are of course (deliberately) as flat and soapy as can be, but the wry relationship between Dizzy, Johnny and Carmen came into its own a lot better.

It is a pity that Verhoeven has removed the rough edges after test screenings. Originally, Carmen would kiss Johnny after Zander's death, just like Esther opportunistically switches sides in Soldier of Orange. But of course Americans thought that was completely immoral.

Anyway, enough parallels with Soldier of Orange, only in this film everyone really goes to the Eastern Front. While the 1977 film still cautiously explored the gray area between right and wrong, Verhoeven clearly no longer believed in this 20 years later when he made this postmodernist masterpiece.

A wonder this could be made in the US studio system, I'm going to the full 5*.

This film is worth the effort if only because of a very young Barney Stinson in Gestapo coat. "He's scared!", yes. Funny satire about America, the American film and maybe also about Verhoeven himself. Starship Troopers is actually better than his more serious war films.

Long time since I saw this movie. Revised today and up a point. The film has a double meaning and is cleverly put together. In particular the fact that humans actually attack insects and not the other way around . What war does to a group of individuals is shown here well, but sometimes violently. Parallels with actual wars are also sometimes visible.
Saw the movie with commentary from Verhoeven and the screenplay writer. Very informative and interesting! Recommended, if you own DVD!
