Smoke in the Wind plot
"A smoldering valley of death... Where there are friends to be killed and women to be loved before the fires of Hell will die!"
In 1865, the American Civil War has just ended. Five Union soldiers, Pa Mondier, his two sons, and Smoky, are followed as they return to their homes in the Ozarks of northern Arkansas to resume their antebellum lives. However, many residents of the town of Winslow and the surrounding region are reluctant to lend a helping hand to the Yankees, as Arkansas has been a member of the Confederate States of America. Mort Fagan leads ex-Confederate soldiers in an attack on the former Unionists, mortally wounding Pa Mondier and sparking a feud. Some residents of Winslow are working to heal the country's divisions, and it is to them that the returning veterans must look for support.
