Barry is a boy with asthmatic problems. He lives with his father, a computer programmer, in Texas. Barry has a hard time at school, because of his health and because he is always bullied. The only thing Barry can enjoy is when he fantasizes that he is out with Chuck Norris. Tired of being the bully, Barry decides to take karate lessons and meet Chuck Norris one day.

The acting and the retarded, Karatekid-like story make no sense. Horrible moral lessons and poorly shot fight scenes help to ruin the last bit of this idiotic children's film.

Not really a good movie. The fights were weak and the acting not good. Especially the scenes in which Jonathan Brandis gets another asthma attack could have been a bit more believable in my opinion. But for the rest it was entertaining. 2.0.

Revisited this martial arts classic after years. Came across it on Youtube where it is complete and in high quality.
In my early teens I loved this one, now that you see it again a lot less. Actually just a ripoff of Karate Kid. We follow Barry Gabrewski (Brandis), asthma patient and class bully. He is a huge fan of Chuck Norris and often daydreams where he is his “Sidekick”, which are really childish scenes. Barry wants to learn karate and goes to learn from Mr. Lee (Mako). Later he is challenged to a karate tournament, and decides to participate. Of course Chuck Norris is also present, and because Barry's team is one man short, Norris decides to join them. Barry's biggest dream comes true.
Positives are the training sessions with Mako and the karate tournament, although the fight between Norris and Piscopo is unfortunately also childish.
Jonathan Brandis will be recognized by most from the mini-series IT 1990, where he played Bill. Brandis died at the age of 27 by suicide. The police found him in his apartment in Los Angeles, where he had hanged himself. Later it turned out that he was very depressed, sad.
