Went in with no expectations other than my appreciation for Kaya Scodelario as an actress, but I think it's all quite okay and easily the best Resident Evil film adaptation to date. At least the movie is horror without a magical Mila Jovovitch running around. There are some choices that I strongly disagree with, mostly because the characters have had personality changes and skill sets for unclear reasons that are simply not necessary. That Claire is a little more badass than in the games is okay in itself, but Leon has suddenly become quite a sucker. Jill, besides the fact that she really doesn't look anything like the games, is suddenly an expert marksman instead of a lock pick master. Fortunately Chris and Wesker were still quite okay.

Anyway, the film at least makes significantly better use of the source material than the other films. Creatures match, there are some winks to some situations from the games, the police station is completely correct and the ending with the rocketlauncher is bland and secretly very nice. Not a good movie, but I still had a good time after my expectations were really tempered. In terms of special effects and gore, there was at least something to enjoy.

Basically, Roberts has gold in his hands with this film, but the film is too sloppy to be really good.

The atmosphere is set right from minute 1. It feels exciting and it is dirty, dark and wet. At times it is very creepy and also the intro of Raccoon City itself gives a gray and dark atmosphere. How unfortunate it is that an attempt at humor is made with such a newbee at the police station who gets the blood under your nails for the first hour. Those are the choices that a movie like this doesn't need at all. You notice anyway that the director makes some wrong choices. The music sometimes removes the tension from the scenes, so that potentially scary moments are stripped of any residual tension. The CGI varies in quality. It didn't bother me until the end, but at that point it went completely wrong.

There are also too many characters walking around who are fortunately quickly decimated into zombies. Some side plots (like that girl in the orphanage) don't really come into their own because of this.

Too bad, because the story in the base is just fine and sufficient to entertain the entire playing time.

It's just the aforementioned choices of the movie studio, writers, and directing that bring the movie down. But it's not as bad as some here say. Fans of the first films in this series will also enjoy this "prequel".

I do understand some of the negative comments. If I hadn't played almost all of these games, I don't think I would have given him enough. I kinda miss Mila Jovovich in this movie. There's enough gore in it and it's good horror, but the movie and the characters don't really grab you. Claire may be the only one who achieves that a bit. The story is okay but didn't find it very exciting. The parts that could get exciting were also over in no time. The fact that you see all the characters again, the mansion and the fire at the police station make you think back to the games and that gives me that little bit extra for a sufficient. Jammer had seen it several times and wanted to see it, but this is certainly not a film you want to see again, unlike the resident evil series with mila.
