After years of revision and as mediocre as I remembered it, it wasn't. Hill is one of the best action directors of recent decades. He has made significant contributions to cult cinema, the modern western and the buddy film.

This film helped shape the clichés of this subgenre, but is also guilty of using hackneyed plot developments. Two unlikely partners who reluctantly have to seek out cooperation, only to come to the conclusion that at the end of the day that cooperation has won mutual respect. Even then, Red Heat was not original.

The best part of the film, in my opinion, is the action. There are definitely better action/police crime movies out there in the 70's, 80's and 90's. They are usually in your movie book. Although Red Heat is not worth a movie book mention, there are really more weaker than stronger counterparts to be found. The moment it starts shooting, the film is rawer, more dynamic and more entertaining than the bulk of the competition. And that's because of Hill.

Because Hill knows how to shoot an action scene. He spreads just enough about the playing time, which all differ just enough from each other to keep entertaining. In addition, the tone is good. Nicely light. The jokes and pranks themselves are a bit disappointing. Usually quite bland, but sometimes quite nice. The duo must have it both full of charisma and not acting at all. They actually don't have enough of that charisma to completely compensate, at most partly.

Hill is a fine director after all.[i]He may have made too few really good films after the early eighties, but it always entertains me enough to leave me reasonably satisfied. If I were to make a math problem out of it, I would get 3 stars. Emotionally, too.

One of the lesser movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Red Heat doesn't have enough action and humor to match, for example, the movie Commando. The story of a Soviet agent in America is funny in itself. Schwarzenegger even manages to convince somewhat as Russian. There's just too little done with the idea to make it interesting.

In any case, the chemistry isn't there between Belushi and Schwarzenegger. Not for a moment did I feel like I was watching two "buddy cops".

There is very little to say about Red Heat. It is an extremely average film that does nothing really wrong but also little good. Of all the films with Schwarzenegger in the lead role, this one dangles at the bottom of the list.

3*

“Since I figure cops are cops the world over, how do you Soviets deal with all the tension and stress?”

“Vodka.”

Reasonable action film that really relies on the interplay and chemistry between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jim Belushi. Schwarzenegger's acting is sometimes painful to watch, but on the other hand, he does make for some comedic situations. And it's all wonderfully over the top, and that's how I like to see these kinds of action movies.
