Take the clichés out of the box again, because here too you will find a lot of them. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. With this film it's a bit in between, but it doesn't work here more often than it does.

Other than that, the movie starts off well. I thought the part in the snow area was a good start and the film continues that good start for a while. It actually only sinks in a bit once Ben rings his father's doorbell, with the treaty

The film mixes mystery and adventure well. The story is certainly interesting too. Templars bring the treasure to America, with the Freemasons later hiding it from the constantly changing enemy. I liked solving riddles, with a little bit of American history. Only the many clichés that the film involves in it were unnecessary. Riley: The silly side-kick who comes up with a brilliant idea at some point, but the rest of the movie is pretty pointless and mostly acts as a comic relief. Chase: A woman that you can see from the first scene, that she is forced into the story at a certain moment. Then at the end, the whole 'spontaneous' kiss between Chase and Gates in the middle of the heat. Couldn't be missing of course.

Cage was also quite happy with this film and the acting was fine. I actually thought Cage was the best in this movie. Sean Bean as Bad Guy was nice, but nothing memorable.

Nice treasure-hunting film that just lacks the squeak of Steven Spielberg's Mother of All Treasure-hunting films - the excitement and Saturday afternoon feel of it is sorely missed here, and the way in which one incomprehensible punch line after another is reduced to a logical clue adds to the overall credibility no good, no matter how low the requirements are for these kinds of stories. The actors try their best, and the humor generated by Justin Bartha's sidekick regularly catches on with me, but as a whole the film is too long, and the climax feels a bit rushed.

Not good.

Nicolas Cage is totally miscast as a kind of (modern) Indiana Jones who, how could it be otherwise, surprisingly smoothly fits many puzzle pieces together in his search for some treasure. The movie is quite monotonous, with a replay on from one clue to the next. There is no real threat, the casting of Sean Bean is of course also much too transparent, where the only surprise is that he survives the film. Cage and his love interest Diane Kruger have remarkably little chemistry.
