May the forks be with us

Very funny, lame and totally idiotic film about a bunch of freaks who try to be a superhero, but just lack superpowers. Very well-known cast in which Stiller and Macy are already very funny, but Reubens really takes the cake in terms of total folly. The blue Raja is also very funny.

4*

Ben Stiller is Ben Stiller of course. This Mystery Men takes on superheroes. Something you can compare with Kick Ass, but much more brave. It's all rather bland with only rarely a nice fragment. This film isn't bad, but it comes out too thin to really amuse as a comedy. Humor remains relatively natural. I do agree that Macy plays a standout role again. Don't give him a leading role, but these kinds of supporting roles fit him perfectly.

Very nice parody of the superhero movie.

The heroes are overly curiously dressed characters who go wild with the most ridiculous weapons in a simple storyline. The line about a group of weirdos with inferior or no superpowers, who is firmly convinced that they do have these powers, is usually funny.

No hero is like another. One has a slightly more interesting inner layer than the other and the other wears a much more hilarious costume or has a slightly more unusual super power than the one. There is deviation and variation.

The heroes have very diverse personalities inside and out and that's nice. In this way sinking moments are prevented. Every hero has his moments to show his specific ability and always does so long enough to keep the viewer interested. This way there is no irritation or boredom. The characteristics and idiosyncrasies are too different from each other for that and the stage moments are, as mentioned, too short. The film focus is effectively staggered.

The humor is many and diverse. The line runs from witty one-liner and woolly language to the better fling and other forms of physical comedy. It goes from pointy and witty to bland and fainter and back again. There is comedic variety to match the variety of characters. One humorous moment is therefore clearly more successful than the other.

And so the film goes up and down and back and forth at a decent pace. Sometimes humorous, usually entertaining and never boring.
