Mediocre, but ultimately quite interesting. First of all, because this is actually a kind of sequel to Fearless, in which Jet Li also plays, but then in the role of the murdered master. Secondly, because of the relationship between the Japanese and the Chinese. You would expect that in Chinese films all the Japanese are bad, but that is not the case here. Not in, for example, Fearless, but that film is a bit younger, and perhaps the sentiments are a bit less than before (although I sometimes think that some politicians do their utmost to achieve the opposite). Finally, this seems to be a remake of Fist of Fury, which I have not seen, but still nice to keep in mind.

Like many films from this era, such as the Once upon a Time in China films, it sounds like it was dubbed in afterwards. It is striking that the voices of the characters can be completely different when they speak a different language. I am getting more and more used to it, but it will never completely stop irritating. What is different from the other films from these years is that the tone is serious. I have to say that I never really liked that cheesiness, so I can only be happy about it.

The soundtrack is not really special - when there is music, it is often those ugly synthesizer tunes - and the images are not much better. The fights are quite hard; more kickboxing than ballet, where I am more a fan of elegance. In the end the film gets stuck at 2.5*.

I think this is a very strong Kung Fu film with hard action. You feel the pain of the blows and every now and then a limb is broken. Jet Li comes across as a bit boring at first with his stoic expression, but after a while he becomes a bit more human. There is no humor in this film, so don't expect a film in Jackie Chan style. Every now and then the action is a bit exaggerated and then you know that the men are hanging by strings, which looks a bit fake.

This movie is actually all about the fight scenes, the story itself is wafer thin
