Beautiful environment to shoot a film like this, the special effects could also be done. However, the script could have been better. The whole voodoo aspect could have been left out in my opinion. Furthermore, I found the lesbian move of the character played by China Chow rather strange and the affection between the male protagonist and the daughter of the house Eliza comes rather out of the blue. With a tighter, more credible story and a bit more humor it could have been a film on the level of Lake Placid 1. Now it remains just above average.

I found the amount of nudity and explicit word choice in the version I saw on DVD striking. Not that I mind, but I thought this was originally a Syfy film and explicit scenes are usually absent in those types of films.

Nice name.

The title is more fun than the result itself, and that was to be expected from a film like this. Still, I have to say that I am positively surprised in that respect, and this film belongs to one of the better SyFy films there is. Moreover, this one is not that lazy.

No, director Dippé genuinely tries to do something beautiful with his film and keeps the fish out of the picture as long and as much as possible. Compared to a lot of other and mainly more recent monster films from B-companies, that is a breath of fresh air, especially because there is also room for other types of horror to break through.

The location is beautiful and at night some beautiful images come to life. The mist that floats over the river, for example, those images provide an ideal horror atmosphere and films like this can use that well. The pity is that the film can never really become exciting despite a reasonable setup in the direction. The build-up and pay-offs are namely on the lazy side.

Moreover, that fish is never a scary or threatening apparition and I actually wonder why that creature has to be called a "frankenfish". The fish can come onto land, and I can't remember any other ability that sets this fish apart from other, stranger fictional monsters. In any case, I didn't think it was a very successful idea as a monster.

Furthermore, the film is not long, but the many clichés, mediocre progression in the story, meaningless characters and general lack of tension ensure that this Frankenfish does not stand out too much above the other SyFy films. It could have done so, even with the aforementioned criticisms, but the fact that you have to wait so long for the real action during this film (about half the film) unfortunately slows this down. Too bad.

It is a nice film title! Not that Frankenstein has much to do with it, apart from the fact that they do try. And a mutated fish that looks like a cross between a large piranha and a crocodile, it is something different, although the concept is always the same. Not very innovative. A fine location, but you can hardly call that a merit.

It's not like the beast is much to see. A bit disappointing all. Even the end is hardly a real fight. Fortunately it doesn't last too long. Here and there a nice kill though. Acting as expected poor also by the very weak conversations, even in the heat of the moment.
