Dante's Peak plot

"The pressure is building..."

Four years after his fiancée was killed in a volcanic eruption in Colombia, volcanologist Harry Dalton has still not found peace. He even considers quitting volcanology altogether, until an ex-colleague asks him to go to Dante's Peak to study the light seismicity that has been observed there. Touristic Dante's Peak is run by Mayor Rachel Wando, a businesswoman and single mother. Rachel is about to sign a rewarding contract with a millionaire who wants to invest heavily in the town. Harry is stunned to find that the situation is worse than expected: all signs point to an approaching catastrophe.

Undervalued.

Because, perhaps it is true that the film deals with a list of clichés, but it does so in a truly masterful way. Nice images of the town, decent special effects, and not too much nonsense in the script - well, that thing with the spider robot. Or that fuss at the hot springs - and not just the idiocy of the whole thing, also the prudishness with which it appears. Oh well, the film must remain suitable for a wide audience of course.

Brosnan is right on point, better in fact than any other role I've seen him play in. Hamilton, well, he was really better in T2, of course, but gets away with it. Too bad that the rest of the reels are so thin, that makes the film a sight to behold rather than a potential masterpiece in the disaster/blockbuster genre. Because we're not really that far from that, actually, I think.
