Nice British crime film. Fortunately not another repeatedly amateurish tune that once again focuses on football hooligans, Essex or a Ritchie wannabe-like construction.

For starters, Avengement often switches with time. The escape of the mutilated prisoner (which is also very tightly portrayed here by Scott Adkins), with that whole Tarantino-esque whole in that pub... and the flashbacks that make the film look like a prison thriller.

And it knows how to get it right. Adkins wants revenge. Revenge on those who deceived him and everything and everyone responsible for it. The grand prize is for his brother. The scenes in the pub are very amusing. The characters have something charismatic and the barmaid is also a nice company. But Adkins knows how to keep things under control and, while he drinks away the beers, takes the time to make his statement. Then the flashbacks in prison. Pruning hard, cold, hopeless, and merciless. Pretty much how a prison movie should be.

The action and fight scenes are nice and violent and bloody and know how to hit. The director has not been tame. It is remarkable that this is from a director who has a couple of gigantically bad B-movies to his name.

And that Adkins can become the new fighter actor ala the former Van Damme, is also clear.

Excellent crime film, with many time trips... and the blunt English humor should not be missed either. Well, then you have some nice ingredients.

4.0*

Tough and fairly smooth British crime film. I thought Adkins acted better than I expected.
Unfortunately, Avengement also contains unprecedented ridiculousness, as we are used to from such action films. And they range from irritating (What the hell else needs to happen before a prison warden realizes he has a problem?) to downright scenario-subversive (In the lion's den the Standing with your back to the barmaid all the time, seriously? A screenwriter can only write something so stupid like that for one reason). That's why I really think it's a gross flaw of an otherwise successful ram and beech film. But since that's the only real downside, still 3 stars for me.
