“Guess what guys, it's time to embrace the horror! Look, we've got front row tickets to the end of the earth!”

Armageddon continues to be top entertainment for two and a half hours. Of course it's all overly patriotic and you shouldn't look at the logic, but as a bombastic action film with everything in it, Armageddon remains unparalleled. The visual aspect in particular is incredibly well done, but the humor and the acting are also perfectly fine. And the music of course. Very atmospheric.

Willis, Thornton, Liv Tyler, Affleck, Duncan, Patton, Buscemi etc. All the actors are well into their roles, and together they make an entertaining company that you can easily keep watching. Add to that the beautiful images and music, and very little can go wrong. That ending may be cheesy, but after all these years, it still gives me goosebumps. Again, top entertainment.

Typical Bay.

Anyone hoping for any logic or credibility simply has the wrong director. There are a lot of scenes in it that really don't make sense, but are still pretty cool to watch. And that's exactly where Bay manages to find the right balance with his film.

Armageddon is one of the epitomes of Hollywood cinema. Largely set up, shot with a lot of bravado and unabashedly exaggerated to increase the effect. But also very self-conscious, knowing that this is not an in-depth cinema and that one should not invest time and effort in it.

I've seen this before, but apparently never voted for it. Didn't remember the rig, maybe that's why (watched Deepwater Horizon yesterday) I felt like seeing it again. Intro is a bit slow, but once the crew is ready to go into space there is hardly any delay in the film. Some corniness here and there of course, but those are quite short moments that barely manage to break the action.

Bay remains one of the best Hollywood directors, one of the few who really knows what to do with such films.

3.5*

Actually the ultimate Michael Bay movie; stupid and bombastic and therefore quite entertaining. The film is a thousand times stupider than its predecessor The Rock, yet not as infantile, empty and visually ugly as those Transformers films he went on to make next. The fact that Armageddon is totally stupid in terms of plot is actually one of the funniest elements. Bay throws together some fine actors, fills the film with devastating explosions and waving American flags, and drama thinks of Ben Affleck playing with crackers on Liv Tyler's stomach, while Aerosmith plays a sensitive song. The fact that Armageddon has no subtlety at all makes the film quite memorable. Silly, but memorable.

3 stars.
