The story is completely formulaic and the subplot surrounding Black Mantis - which seems to be mainly there to boost the diversity quota - is poorly developed. The fact that Aquaman is still manageable, despite the excessive playing time, is mainly due to the often eye-catching and inventive design of the underwater world and the creatures that inhabit that world, especially in the inevitable, epic final battle. In terms of special effects, this is absolutely worth it, but those hoping for substantive originality will be disappointed in this predictable DC film adaptation.

"But Aquaman, you cannot marry a woman without gills?! You're from two different worlds!" Seriously, never thought a movie where the superhero resembles Machine Head's lead singer could be this boring. They've clearly tried to give the silliest of all superheroes a little street cred with a semi-rough, Venice Beach hipster look - see also the wildly crazy intro to the Russian submarine, even the brawls are in an average Don Wilson vehicle less caricatured. For the rest: a meaningless sequence of expensive-looking, but sterile CGI panoramas and an accumulation of mythological nonsense. As if they have to invent a new aspect of Atlantis folklore in every scene "yes, we forgot that the emperor of the slipper animals had to give up the magical seaweed crown a thousand years ago in the battle against the amphibian Huguenots!" Whatever. I don't even understand how that underwater empire can survive for a few weeks: after a 3-minute battle, about half of their empire seems destroyed. And what a boring place, Atlantis! It looks like a kind of underwater Dubai, with all kinds of glossy structures and showy 'technology'. But what do the inhabitants if they don't go to war? How do they provide for their maintenance? Do they have a job? What types of entertainment are there? Underwater casinos? Plankton mushrooms? Aquawhores? All missed opportunities.

Oh Wan.

He already managed to amaze by making the transition from horror to action/thriller fairly easily. In that respect, you could have some hope for this film. DC also gives its directors a little more freedom than Marvel, so that also spoke in favor of this film.

It is also difficult to rate this film. I really hate the whole gray mouse thing from Marvel, it's clear that this film doesn't want to participate in that. Aquaman is not your average superhero film, unfortunately that does not mean that it is also a good film.

Wan has enough fun with the material in itself, but apparently didn't dare to take that last step. Namely what a Waititi with Thor dared: just approach it as pure comedy. Sure, as in all blockbusters there are attempts at humor, but they are moments, one-liners, closing scenes. The rest of the film is sadly dead serious, something that was really not a good idea with this catastrophic nonsense.

The story is really complete rubbish, the world in which this takes place was never entirely clear to me either, the actors are really sad, just like their costumes and the drama is taken so seriously that it is hard to comprehend that no one in the production is on a at one point said, "This really can't be guys." It feels like school drama at times.

There are some individual moments that are cool, but they are really shots and sequences, not even scenes. For example, the introduction of that thing that Aquaman rides is pretty cool, but when you see him standing up there in his gold/green suit, all the cool is immediately gone. Mno, Wan tried his best, but clearly wasn't the man for this kind of movie.

broke.

1.0*
