Matthew Vaughn wants to helm a Star Wars reboot for a new generation of fans.
The original Star Wars trilogy is among the most beloved movies of all time. A prequel and sequel trilogy was produced, and although financially successful, they did not catalyse as much love and passion from the partisan Star Wars fanbase.
There is an entire Star Wars universe now thanks to the creation of Disney+ series The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett and Ashoka.
Disney attempted to recast Han Solo for Solo: A Star Wars Story, with Alden Ehrenreich replacing Harrison Ford as a younger version of the character.
The movie was a box office bomb, which led to Disney chief Kathleen Kennedy admitting that it was perhaps a mistake to recast such an iconic role.
But, Vaughn doesn't believe Star Wars is above the reboot treatment.
“I would say, for me, doing a Star Wars movie is to play with the characters I loved," the Kick-Ass and Kingsman director said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
“So if they said to me, ‘Do you want to reboot Star Wars and actually have Luke Skywalker, Solo, and Vader, and you do your version of it,’ everyone would say, ‘You’re an idiot to try,’ but that would excite me.
Vaughn reckons if you can recast characters like James Bond and Wolverine, you can do it with Star Wars characters.
“Why not ? Bond, do you mind Bond? I mean, you asked me who’s going to play the next Wolverine," he continued.
"Why are these characters so hallowed that from ’77, you can’t redo it for a new audience?”

The Skywalker saga
“'Star Wars is the Skywalker family, and that’s where I think they’ve gone wrong," Vaughn explained.
"They’ve done brilliantly in the TV , but it needs an epic new film, and that’s what I would do.
“Everyone’s going to go bats*** crazy, but let’s bring it on, because if you want a new generation, make the movie for them. The old generation can hopefully make it well enough that they go, ‘Okay, I’m enjoying it.'”
There are several new Star Wars movies in production from the likes of Taika Waititi, Shawn Levy, Patty Jenkins and James Mangold.
