Scream 6 star says movie is gory enough to 'distract' from Neve Campbell's absence
Scream star Jenna Ortega says fans of the slasher series will be too distracted by the action and gore of Scream 6 to be concerned about the absence of franchise favourite Neve Campbell.
Earlier this year, Campbell confirmed that she would not be returning for the upcoming Scream movie set for release in 2023 as she felt undervalued by the producers with regard to her salary offer.
The actress believes that there was an element of sexism in her negotiations over pay, as she has starred in every Scream feature since the original in 1996.
Fans were naturally upset when it was announced that Campbell would not be in Scream 6, which is set to act as a direct sequel to the franchise reboot, Scream, released in 2022.
But, Ortega has promised enough that Sidney might not be missed.
"I feel like I can't really speak too much on that just because it's not necessarily my character, but I will say there's so much going on in this next one, that it's so action-heavy and so gore-heavy that I think you're gonna be distracted almost," she told Entertainment Tonight.
"But it's very clear, like, there's references to Sidney, of course.
"You know, it's nice because there's still a protectiveness in the script and that's something that the actors had naturally over her because obviously we respect her, and we want the best for her. She's missed and thought of."
Who stars in Scream 6?
The 2022 reboot/sequel of Scream was a commercial and critical success.
On a budget of $24 million, Scream earned $140 million at the worldwide box office, a healthy return for an R-rated 18+ film.
A major contributing factor to the success of the latest movie in the Scream franchise has been attributed to the young cast who breathed new life, or death, into Woodsboro.
Franchise favourites Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette all featured, but the plot centred around a new batch of teens, led by Melissa Barrera.
The actress will again be the main protagonist in the next movie which will be the sixth in the franchise. It will take place in New York City as the characters attempt to move on from the terrifying events which took place in Woodsboro in 2022's Scream.
Barrera, Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Courtney Cox will all reprise their roles from the previous movie for Scream 6, while Hayden Panettiere returns despite her apparent death in Scream 4.
