With Christmas just around the corner, there is only one major cinema release this week, and we have all the details for you.
2023 has been a massive year for cinema, with the summer period flourishing thanks to the releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer. The movies were released around the same time and many cinema-goers actually did the double-feature, which was affectionately named 'Barbenheimer'.
Barbie became the most successful movie ever directed by a solo female director, earning $1.44 billion at the box office, while Oppenheimer has made $953m. No pressure for the movies that follow, then.
The year has also been impacted by the writer and actor strike in Hollywood, as several productions have faced delays into 2024. Now those strikes are over, productions can recommence.
Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon was another huge release that is expected to be an awards darling. The Marvels came out recently, too, and underwhelmed at the box office.
New Movie Releases this week
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be the end of an era for DC Studios as it will mark the final movie in the DC Extended Universe. A new universe is being developed by James Gunn, and with various recent disappointments like The Flash, DC are rebooting things, while star Jason Momoa has already suggested he won't play Arthur Curry/Aquaman again.
Official premise:
'After failing to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta wields the power of the mythic Black Trident to unleash an ancient and malevolent force. Hoping to end his reign of terror, Aquaman forges an unlikely alliance with his brother, Orm, the former king of Atlantis. Setting aside their differences, they join forces to protect their kingdom and save the world from irreversible destruction.'
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom cast: Jason Momoa, Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Dolph Lundgren, Randall Park and Nicole Kidman.
Smaller, limited releases include Dunki, Salaar, Sweet Sue, Sara's School Life and The Creepy Witch.
