Mediocre. You may have to be an American to appreciate this very serious, almost humorless and often pessimistic melodrama. Because for me, as a sober Dutchman, this story about a family full of neurotics who regularly five minutes after they roll down the street fighting, already happily fall into each other's arms again is hard to comprehend. This collection of idiots made me especially nervous. In the long run very tiring to watch, this full of self-pity sitting family. No, then I'd rather watch an average Woody Allen film ten times over that manages to put down these types of characters with the right dose of self-mockery and some ability to put things into perspective. Actors are therefore also below average or not very noticeable. Bateman in the central lead plays very one-dimensional and quickly gets bored. Grandma Fonda (reasonable botox) deserves something better than having to put down an unbelievable lesbian at the end of her career, but in terms of acting talent she still stands out. The rest of the cast runs and flutters (Driver) often screaming and without nuance through the image. Well-intentioned, but a bit of a failure.

“It's hard to see people from your past when your present is so cataclysmically screwed up, you know.”

“Welcome to my world.”

Great movie about a dysfunctional family. Many films have already been made on this subject, but of course there is a good reason for that. It is sometimes over the top and absurd, but in the end it all stems from realistic and recognizable situations. And with a number of strong actors and a combination of (strange) humour, over the top situations and some dramatic moments, This Is Where I Leave You is a nice and entertaining film.
