Interesting but never really exciting.

Many of those annoying flashbacks that don't really bother me.

Therefore half a point less.

Entertaining, albeit a bit too smoothly filmed and edited German thriller about an outsider (Tom Schilling) who joins a group of hackers. Soon the group's playful actions take on dangerous proportions. The fast pace and the enthusiastic performance of the cast provide a lot of energy, but along the way the film paints itself into a corner. A number of surprising twists can do little to change that. It's all just a bit too superficial and frantically hip. Director Baran Bo Odar would be much more impressive a few years later with the German-language series Dark.

Swiss director Baran bo Odar comes up with an extremely modern hacker thriller, which, thanks to the fresh directorial tricks, always feels like an original film. However, the final content is anything but original, but due to the special structure, it passes the viewer for some time. What Who Am I mainly benefits from is the interesting representation of the visual world, specifically the Dark Web, which gives the film that extra touch to rise above mediocrity. What is unfortunate is the somewhat predictable design of the characters, as well as the too easy use of clichés such as the involvement of the Russian mafia and the effect of the police intervention. The screenplay by Odar and co-screenwriter Jantje Friese becomes too confident towards the final phase and adds all kinds of unnecessary plot twists, but Who Am I is actually solid enough without all kinds of fiddling with the plot. An interesting, smooth and, above all, enthusiastic thriller that remains focused for a long time and never loses sight of the end goal (pure entertainment). Nice for a late evening.
