An unsuccessful attempt to revive the feeling of Dances with Wolves. Chastain once again plays an independent, strong woman with verve, but after a reasonable start, the story itself becomes boring and we are left watching a woman sleepwalking. The male roles are also adequately cast, by the way, with solid contributions from Hinds and Rockwell, yet the actors are let down by the unremarkable story. The emotions that should definitely be there simply fail to surface; you remain watching the events from a respectful distance. Apparently a biography, but the real Weldon undoubtedly deserved something better than this fake-feeling drama.

In the 18th century, portrait painter Catherine Weldon [Jessica Chastain] travels to Dakota to paint a portrait of Chief Sitting Bull [Michael Greyeyes], who had dealt with Lieutenant Colonel George Custer during the Battle of Little Bighorn River in 1876. Officer Silas Groves [Sam Rockwell] warns Catherine not to interfere with the negotiations the American army is conducting with the Lakota regarding their territory, but a mutual respect soon develops between the stubborn Lokata leader and the equally determined portrait painter, such that Catherine does indeed begin to care about the fate of the Lakota. Based on Eileen Pollack’s “Woman Walking Ahead: In Search of Catherine Weldon and Sitting Bull”. Well-acted and filmed in beautiful locations, but it remains too superficial, leaving us with little insight into or involvement with the dilemmas both protagonists face.

Quite a nice story about the final days of Sitting Bull. Beautiful in Technicolor, with fine performances from a top cast from Chastain to Hinds, with some cough local color in the form of Michael Greyeyes. A Cree, not a Sioux.

But when I thought about reading up on the subject after the somewhat sentimental ending, it turned out that was really the least of the problems, because very little of the embellished story the film wants to tell—or perhaps I should say something like 'screw it over'—is accurate. Even the lead actress's name is incorrect—that was Caroline, not Catherine. Furthermore, parcivalis's observation above is entirely correct; it all looks rather untarnished for what is essentially a concentration camp during a genocide. Indeed, a romance novel story—mixed with Arendsoog. It is well known that history is treated rather loosely in the US, but in this area, it is truly below par. To which I should perhaps also add that it is perhaps not exactly simple or self-evident to present a truthful and neutral treatment of history—if only because just about all sources are biased. But that is no excuse to make a mess of it, as this film does.

And even apart from that, the film really has little to offer. Compared to the classics of the genre—I’ll just mention Geronimo: An American Legend (1993), or even The Last of the Mohicans (1992). I didn't think those were that good either, but they were definitely a lot better than this one.
