Vinterberg (and quite a few actors) have been roped into making a 1960s propaganda film for the West with all the popular ingredients that go with it. It doesn't suit them.

Of course all Russians are bad - ok, except for one and that one, as it should be in a propaganda film, loses out. Bad, because they are not people, but nationalist helmsmen for whom a human life does not count. The pleas of desperate women and children cannot change that. Feel free to read the cliché here.

The West, on the other hand ... etcetera.

And then the movie. In 2018 we won't let Russians speak English around the year 2000? Those in power, submarine crews, husbands and children, I envy their English language skills. In this way the propagandistic message in language is smoothed out again and we sit shaking our heads to watch the misadventures of those strange English-speaking Russians ....

Oh, how busy I am. Another genre film that wants to be exciting, while the ending is known, that rubs in an oversimplified message with bold strokes of paint, without any compassion. I looked at it and then shrugged.

It's a shame that Vinterberg is a talented author who apparently can't keep his head above water and has to get caught up in making smooth studio films.

Vinterberg manages to make a good film adaptation, free from (too) much sentiment and with a good middle ground between human drama and underwater thriller. Many complain about a lack of tension, but I think this kind of true drama has no need for that at all. Exactly 20 years after the event, I could remember little of the whole thing, except that everyone died. And yet, more than once the rescue seemed within reach, but they were also very unlucky.

It reveals a lot about an obsolete Russian fleet and military hierarchy: poorly maintained equipment, leaking torpedoes, a navy with old men at the top that mainly excels in secrecy and lies. This is the kind of drama that only has losers at the end.

I still doubted whether Vinterberg, as an arthouse director, was the right man for this, but he turned out to be skilled enough to refresh the memories with a larger-scale film than people are used to from him. I thought it was a fine and strong film that approaches the drama in a neutral way from different perspectives.

Watched this true story and it wasn't wrong. A lot of famous people in this movie. The story was interesting enough and the movie looked good.

Thought he was worth seeing.
