Macbeth's wife was very ambitious, she wanted to become a queen, just like her mother. She also wanted to become a queen. Thus Herman Finkers is his masterful sketch about Macbeth (I mean the theater version, which is superior to the animation).

I didn't expect Finkers' version to be as funny as it was, but it's the other extreme as dark, gloomy and serious. Slow images, a lot of empty filmmaking with all those slow motions, a lot of kitschy images (I hardly found the film beautiful) and an enormously frustrating seriousness, not a smile could be seen. The film quickly lost me. I can understand why people think this is great, but I really didn't care for it. The fact that they also use Shakespeare's theatre language doesn't make it any better. It fit in Luhrman's version, this film only makes it even colder and more distant, because evoking emotions with such language doesn't work. I won't give it the lowest score, but this is simply not my film. 1.0*.

I was less familiar with the story of Macbeth. Then a Hamlet with 'To be or not to be' and 'There's something rotten in Denmark' sticks better. The makers happily stick to Shakespeare's original dialogues. Not bad in itself, it worked out well for me with, among others, The Merchant of Venice (2004), Romeo and Juliet (1968), Hamlet (1990) and Titus (1999). The whole thing with Macbeth is rather melancholic. Fortunately, the film can count on a strong cast and the cinematography is especially beautiful. Unfortunately, this is not the best introduction to Macbeth for me, although the film was better than expected.

Director Justin Kurzel clearly has talent when it comes to visual decoration, which is why Macbeth has a number of extremely successful battle scenes. The opening in particular is a true pleasure to watch, combined with a Michael Fassbender who gets into his character very well. Cinematographically there is nothing to complain about, but in terms of content there is an abundance. The relationship development as well as the poetic dialogues are not at all captivating and the slow pace then deteriorates the event further. Apart from the violent crimes, nothing interesting happens in Macbeth, which means that the viewer is not invited to feel anything for the world that is created. Hopefully this film direction is now out of Kurzel's system.
