After seeing Captain Fantastic early this year, I thought I had seen the ultimate film about a dysfunctional family. Not so. “The Glass Castle” takes it one step further. It left me with ambivalent feelings, because although the film is based on the autobiographical book by Jeannette Walls, I regularly thought to myself 'this can't be true'. Apparently so.

The flashbacks are the best part of the film in my opinion, especially the scenes of Father Rex (Woody Harrelson) with his teenage daughter Jeannette aka Mountain Goat (Ella Anderson). But for now I've had it with these kind of Tokkie films.

Strong drama based on true events of a separate "hillbilly" family who don't care about the capitalist rich elite. The start of the film reminded me of Captain Fantastic (2016) with viggo Mortensen. But it went further than that. Woody Harrelson sublimely portrays an alcoholic and unemployed father who dominates his family with his principles. Ultimately, there is little vision or ideology to be seen and they are just excuses to be lazy and avoid responsibilities.

The character of the paterfamilias is difficult to fathom. On the one hand caring and with reassuring words and stories (like that of the starry sky for example), but on the other hand also odious ideas such as the scenes in the swimming pool, the empty promises and the theft of the piggy bank[ /spoiler]. And it didn't get any better later on...

Also interesting to note how loyal the family remains to their parents regardless of what they have all been through. Even Jeannette - strong Brie Larson by the way - who is really disgusted by her father, can't let go of him 100%. Everyone should do what they feel most comfortable with.

Film about an adventurous mother and especially father. On the one hand there is great devotion and love for the family, creativity, lots of ideas and a very alternative philosophy of life to society, but on the other hand there is chaos, hunger, poverty, excessive drinking and ideas that never be finished. The children have great admiration for their father, but also suffer a lot from his way of life. It's a captivating film with excellent acting. The film also reminded me of Captain Fantastic (2016), which has a similar theme, although the effect is different here. It is also based on a true story and a book written by the eldest daughter. Nice to see that in the credits there are still images of the real children and also old film images of the real father and mother.
