The Other Side of the Underneath plot

A young suicidal woman is rescued from a river and taken to a mental institution. Here is the diagnosis of schizophrenia, and she comes into contact with other schizophrenic women. Radical treatments take place, but action is also taken. She discovers that it is not the madness, but the repressed and tortured sexual guilt created by society's taboos that underlies the behavior of the women...

A bombardment of destructive emotions and impulses. Very disturbing film that is difficult to put into words and leaves you as a viewer quite bewildered.

Fortunately, it is not just a dry recording of misery, which I was a bit afraid of beforehand. The derangedness of the patients is strongly depicted and Arden experiments quite a bit with image and sound. The kind of violin music that I normally find a bit kitschy is here so excited that it creates a quite uncomfortable atmosphere. Add to that a lot of screaming, whining, screeching, characters that break several times, strange erotic scenes, weird Teruo Ishii-like performance arts and you have a nice piece of disturbing cinema. Some parts are indeed reminiscent of Avant-Garde theater, I can appreciate it but it will not be for everyone.

During the outdoor party there is a small dip, but fortunately Arden manages to recover towards the finish line. The highlight for me was the jam session just before the outdoor scene. Those strange, penetrating looks, the increasingly noisy music; truly an enormously powerful explosion of raw emotion. For now I'll stick to a generous 4*. Impressive film.
