“My father always said, if you want to see what people are truly made of, start a war.”

Solid. Suite Française is not a real war film, but rather a personal and human drama that happens to be set during the war. The best and worst in people come out in wartime, and in Suite Française we see all this under a magnifying glass in a small French town. You have to take for granted that the Germans speak German to each other, but the French speak English to each other. It doesn't get exciting anywhere and sometimes it's all very noncommittal, but actors like Williams, Thomas, Schoenaerts and Schilling know how to sell it.

Solid war drama that doesn't quite manage to avoid the clichés. What really bothered me is the fact that the French speak English. Why in God's name is that? Especially because the Germans do speak German, as most Germans do. But the story is interesting enough to keep you interested for a few hours and the actors' ensemble is on a roll. In short, worth it for a weekday movie night on the couch

You know that movie with that good German? Well, whoever comes face to face with Michelle Williams will bend his knees anyway, whatever role she plays. In this Suite Francaise she shines in her dazzling simplicity, pure nature without frills (apart from the bright red lipstick). Her opponent only had to mirror and voilà. Sorry about that French. Anyway, luckily the music doesn't need words, any more than love. And it came out great.
