Huge windfall, never heard of this movie but saw it yesterday on a pay channel and it was a great seat. A somewhat wry comedy about a bleak, people-hating man who is on a seemingly aimless mission. Great sarcastic humor that really made me laugh a few times, sort of a biting variation on Redford's Quiz Show. Director Bateman has selected the right man with protagonist Bateman, he has played these types of characters more often now, but never as striking as here. The young lad offers him excellent counterplay, the chemistry jumps off the screen.

Meritorious debut as a film director by Jason Bateman, who himself takes on the lead role as the coarse-mouthed, indifferent Guy Trilby, a 40-year-old man who has found out that despite his age he can still participate in the annual National Spelling Bee. With journalist Jenny [Katryn Hahn] as a sponsor, the organization cannot formally prevent him from doing so. Guy then uses every dirty trick he can think of to knock out his young opponents, but finds his match Chaitanya [Rohan Chand] who, despite Guy's clunky, unfriendly behavior, wants to be best buddies and seems unwavering.

Allison Janney scores as the head of the jury who doesn't shy away from any means to make sure Guy loses weight as quickly as possible and Steve Witting also has some good moments as the one who has to read the words to be spelled out. The chemistry between Bateman and Chand ensures that Chand easily stands up next to his experienced opponent, but the other children also come out well in their small roles. Bateman even manages to prevent the denouement, in which Guy's motives for his participation surface, from degenerating into sentiment.

Entertaining.

Jason Bateman is apparently also the director in addition to the protagonist. He does well on both counts. He himself puts down a rude and cynical guy, but as a director he also delivers a neat film. It is only at the end that one - perhaps unavoidably - seeks out the drama. It's Hollywood, of course, but it's a shame for Bateman's compact and straightforward directorial debut.
