Inside Llewyn Davis is set in the folk scene of the New York neighborhood of Greenwich Village in the 1960s. Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) is an unlucky singer-songwriter. Contemplative introspective.
In which the narrative is present but does not really manage to make any points. Perhaps it should have been left out. Rather go with the music, I would think, and that would have served the message that the film is trying to convey better. Perhaps at the expense of the cat, who is by far the most interesting actor in the film - although I have to say that the bit parts aren't all that bad either. And Isaac doesn't do too bad anyway.
Yet it tingles somewhere, and in the wrong way. For example, it is the scene at home with the cat, where the visitors and the people themselves all wear their rocket-scientist glasses. Just not convincing, and that's kind of the feeling I get from the whole movie. Just like the cars just don't have that thing, and the songs just don't take me along.

Strong and atmospheric film by the Coen brothers. Inside Llewyn Davis strikes a perfect balance between melancholy, humor and drama, and manages to sustain that throughout the entire film. The strongest points are the atmosphere, the cinematography, the actors and the well-chosen music. The entire film is beautifully shot in a sort of grey/brown color, and it makes for an enjoyable and sad viewing experience at the same time.
The actors are well cast, and Oscar Isaac knows how to portray a (un) sympathetic and pitiful character. You find Llewyn a sad figure and a jerk, but at the same time you empathize with him. Mulligan puts down a nice character, and Timberlake does a good job too. The scene where Timberlake, Isaac and Driver record a song together (Please Mr. Kennedy) is a highlight. Inside Llewin Davis is a real Coen film, and in this case it works out positively.

Pleasant film —with an authentic-looking 60s atmosphere— about a songwriter who pursues a professional life in the music world. Because of his idiosyncratic attitude, he mainly gets in the way of himself.
Oscar Isaac plays a great lead role. Moreover, he has a beautiful voice, which ensures that the film contains a particularly pleasant soundtrack.
The supporting roles of John Goodman, Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan and Adam Driver are little more than some stretched cameos. They barely play a significant role in the story.
