The film is about the problems in a working-class family in London. Billy is a drug addict and is thrown out of the house by Raymond, he now has to fend for himself. Raymond is a violent person and this causes even more problems within the family.

The most intense movie of the year!?
That's what it says on the poster of this movie. But it's not intense at all. It is also not brought intensely at all and therefore quite a wrong slogan.
Not a movie for me at all. The characters are all irritating characters for whom you get no sympathy or compassion. I just let them all fall apart on the spot and so I didn't care at all how they will fare and loses the horrors and problems that the people in it have to endure any kind of impact.
The film is also very long just with their endless conversations that can't captivate even a bit. The film is also just way too stretched with too many edits and too many repetitive images. Way too much swearing with their focking Cunt! You fucking silly cunt!
Nothing against swearing but this was too much of a good thing. The film doesn't have much to it and all the swearing in the world doesn't make it any better.
The acting was very good and the film does achieve a good kind of realism, but it is a pity that the rest relies so much on long-winded, uninteresting dialogues, characters of whom you do not care what happens to them, way too much swearing and also a lot long scenes.

Apparently the only movie Gary Oldman ever directed. It is certainly not bad, depressing then again. We follow the life of nasty jerk Ray, and especially how that life continues to fall apart due to his own shitty behavior. A kind of British Seul Contre Tous, although this one was less appealing to me. Ray is an aggressive alcoholic, likes to beat up his girlfriend, pregnant or not, son Billy is a sad junkie. It's an unrelenting mountain of misery thrown at you, in a dirty, dark, grubby British underclass movie. Also rarely heard such a high frequency of cunts (and also fucks). Anyway, the movie was impressive in a way, but at one point I was beaten down by what horrible characters they were and what misery they caused each other. And especially Ray. And that made me wonder at a certain point what else could be said here - it mainly felt like a continuous accumulation of misery and more of the same.

Good film about a working-class family in London where drugs and violence are the order of the day. This directorial debut by Gary Oldman is quite disconsolate and therefore not exactly a happy film. Raw images (the camera work, the locations and the actors). An intense role by Ray Winstone, but on the whole a bit long-winded.
