Meh.

Pretty promising start, but what follows is something very close to dullness. Tension is almost completely absent and what you do have is a melodramatic quest by both man and woman. The ending could be stolen from me.

A strong role is played by Rooney Mara, someone with a truckload of charisma. Casey Affleck on the other hand… phew. Good as a silly bit part, but otherwise he's just too boring for a part like this, he also has such a terribly lame voice.

Visually, the film is otherwise still attractive. It feels a bit like Malick, although in that case it is always a matter of making sure that it doesn't get too floaty. Ain't them Bodies Saints doesn't have that much trouble with that, but it can't hold back anywhere either.

Well, let me tell you about something

Let me tell you about the future

In the future I'm a very old man

and I'm standing in the doorway

We're in a house

It's our house, somewhere far away from here

where everything is green and the sun is almost set

Lowery knows how to highlight that pathos, that poetic longing... with his film. This indeed resembles what Malick does in a number of his later films, but Bob and Ruth are very far removed from the nihilism and total alienation of the protagonists in Badlands.

What Bob lives and fights for is precisely a place in the world for him and his loved ones, and whether that desire is in vain or not doesn't really matter to its essence. This is in contrast to, for example, the love in Altman's Thieves Like Us, which eventually disappears from the face of the earth, as if it had never been there.

- Tell me more about that house

It's big, maybe a farm

It's old

It's older than us

At the same time it feels like maybe I built it

Malick and Altman are my favorites, but this Lowery can also be added.

At first glance, a standard runaway crook who wants to be reunited with his family. The plot is somewhat different because Lowery tries to put different stresses in it. No specific reunion with, at least just disregarding the ending, but it was not a happy or lasting reunion .

The film's problem, however, seems to me to be the lack of tension. There will be no real manhunt and the attempts at reunification get bogged down in endless and pointless dialogues with secondary characters. The film starts promising, but doesn't really get off the starting blocks, I think. It has nothing to do with the slowness of the film. I was just missing something fundamental, something that would suck me into the movie.

Still an extra compliment for the atmosphere and the feeling that the film gave about the sultry South, although it is sometimes very thick.
