A little lighter than I expected. There are some strange characters walking around in this Once Upon A Time In China, but it is entertaining nonetheless. With Jet Li you know that the martial arts are all right. It must be said that it is a long ride that does not always fascinate. Somehow I had the impression that the makers wanted to get close to Hollywood films of that time. Despite the slumbering anti-Western undertone, by the way. I thought the story was a bit simple though. I'll have to start part two soon, because I had a lot of fun with it.

Still a strong movie.

It is striking that the theme (the rise of foreign nations in China) is still being worked out. Usually these kinds of movies revolve around the action and the plot is completely unimportant. Here Hark spends some time on the theme, although the elaboration is not immediately very deep or nuanced.

But in the end it is the action that convinces. Li continues to be great, some scenes remain top notch in the genre, especially the final fight in the barn. Beautiful choreography, more than properly executed. It is not for nothing that this film has become a classic.

The finish is a bit rough and the acting is an acquired taste, but that's normal for this kind of Hong Kong movies. In any case, it remains a must for fans of the martial arts genre, especially those who have a soft spot for those 90s films.

Reviewed today and this continues to be a great movie! Jet Li has a very nice role here and this suits him well! The battle scenes are unparalleled! The final battle with the falling and moving ladders is a masterpiece! As well as the fight in the rain with the falling beam. I also think the camera work is well done. Many scenes are very well and spectacularly portrayed. Especially if you consider that this film was released in 1991. Check out the sequels again. You also get a good picture of China in change.
