When penniless vagrant Juan Peréz tries to commit suicide in protest against the government and his social situation, he becomes a celebrity. The Ministry of Economy, haunted by the scandal of Pérez's suicide attempt, decides to reward him by enriching his life with a small house, a car and a job. But when Pérez's other poor friends learn the cause of his sudden happiness, they decide to imitate his suicide attempt from various buildings in Mexico City.
