Minamata: Kanja-san to Sono Sekai plot
Japan, fifties. In Minamata, on Kyushu, there is a factory of the Chisso group that produces chemicals such as fertilizers. The waste materials, including mercury, are dumped into the sea. The population lives from fishing. In the early 1950s, the first cases of poisoning appeared, sometimes resulting in a slow and painful death. In 1959 there are already about six hundred injured. The factory starts paying compensation but admits no guilt. The Ministry of Health does not hold the factory liable until 15 years after the start of the dumping. Minamata focuses on the victims.
