"Colonel Jock Sinclair drank with his men... and sang and danced with them... until that day, when a shot rang out... and he stood alone!"
Jock Sinclair is a Scottish Major who is temporarily placed in charge of a regiment. He is someone from the lower classes of society who has worked his way up. A beloved man, but sometimes a little too rough. Colonel Basil Barrow is then put in charge of the regiment, an upper-class man who has gone through all the good schools and loves discipline. The two commanders clash almost immediately.

A good film in which a Scottish Major who is loved by his men is replaced. The film is well-structured, and the two men, each with their own opposing approach to leadership, are well-developed. However, it cannot always be called subtle. Good acting by Alec Guinness and John Mills.

To hell with you, Barrow Boy. What are you? A man or a book?
It started early this year with the two-week war phase surrounding May 4 and 5, and the kick-off took place with this oldie called Tunes of Glory, which, not entirely as expected, contained no war at all and took place entirely at the barracks. Of course, that didn't make the film bad; moreover, we did catch a small glimpse of what war can do to a person.
The story is otherwise all too clear regarding Colonel Sinclair, who is about to be replaced by someone else, and phew, it takes some perseverance with the charade of the bagpipe drinking spree where Sinclair initially presents himself as an unbearable character. He personally reminds me of a family member with whom you would prefer to avoid any conversation or discussion, because the smallest detail or mistake can quickly lead to ridicule or a nasty sneer. That kind of person, then... Barrow seems to be cut from a different cloth. But things are sometimes not what they seem, with Sinclair actually caring about the men, while Barrow turns out to be a devilish stickler for rules who disapproves of everything.
And with that recurring clash against the entire regiment, Tunes of Glory continues, where sympathy for both Sinclair and Barrow alternates regularly. For despite all that bluster, Sinclair seems honest and committed to his men, whereas Barrow evokes sympathy with his exaggerated behavior surrounding his traumatic background regarding the war and his capture by the Japanese. Towards the end, it becomes clear that this clash takes a heavy toll on both men, as there is quite a bit going on with those English mannerisms, rules, and all those inflated characters and egos, beyond the clash of personalities.
And so Tunes of Glory turns out to be a more than decent start to this war period, where both Mills and Guinness show their best side.
