The Exile plot

"Mighty Modern All Talking Epic Of Negro Life"

Chicago, shortly after World War I. The black woman and former maid Edith Duval has moved into a mansion on the south side of Chicago after the property was abandoned by its wealthy owner. Edith is part of a group of epicureans who spend their time gambling, dancing and having fun. One night, at a big party for her friends, the sincere Negro Jean Baptiste takes her aside and confesses to Edith that he is in love with her. Edith informs Jean of her plans to turn the mansion into a gambling palace. Outraged by this plan, Jean lets Edith know of his wish to take her to a ranch in South Dakota to earn their living honestly. However, a scornful Edith sends Jean away.
