I didn't expect a masterpiece, but you can expect some entertainment with a B-movie like this. That was quite disappointing. In fact, after half an hour or forty-five minutes I toyed with the idea of turning it off several times, because nothing exciting or interesting happened at all. With a film like this it seems crazy to me that only after an hour a little bit of action starts, but unfortunately that is the case with CHUD. And you would say that the sewers of New York offer enough potential for some claustrophobic misery. Missed opportunity. Fortunately, after about an hour or so it becomes a bit more fun, when the monsters from the sewers finally start causing some death and destruction. It ends in an incredibly B-movie way, with nonsensical explosions and everything that just falls into place. Otherwise, reasonable in terms of acting, capable or film set for an 80s B-movie horror, nice monsters, but a deadly boring and far too long first hour really ruins the film. Two stars.

Nice video from the Roger Corman stable. I think most video stores had a copy in the horror department, but until now this one had been left out.

Nice monsters, although it takes a while before the fun really starts here, but the police investigation into the mysterious disappearances still manages to hold some attention.

NB! In the director's cut we also see John Goodman briefly appear as a police officer.

Things are not going well in the dark depths of New York. People disappear. The number of missing persons is particularly high among the many homeless people. Carnivorous monsters would be the reason for that. It is up to a number of honorable figures to neutralize the danger. A simple story that provides great entertainment with fun characters, a minimalist synthesizer score, atmospheric locations that show a city in decline and the renewed acquaintance with all kinds of analog objects from the 80s.

CHUD is the only film directed by Douglas Cheek. He has managed to create a fun and witty monster movie that takes place in a dirty urban setting. The dilapidated part of New York where the story is set provides an atmospheric backdrop. Steaming sewers, poorly lit streets, small apartments with drab interiors and the filthy underground housing of the homeless. A satirical tribute to the true New York that was not built on the volatile entrepreneurial spirit of yuppies, jet set, real estate agents and risen politicians. A world within a world.

The monsters look like they were thrown together by a mad artist. The fake blood squirts violently. Neon-fueled slime festers in the underground passages and vaults. And the Geiger counter that the honorable characters use to detect nuclear danger is a chunky device that wouldn't look out of place in a 1950s sci-fi movie. It's wonderfully amateurish. The soundtrack is also wonderful. The synthesizer produces minimalist melodic lines that announce and accompany the events. CHUD is a fun 80s party.
