Der Junge Törless plot

Törless is a student at a boarding school during the glory days of the Hapsburg Empire. He beholds the sadistic cruelties of two of his classmates against others. He doesn't do anything himself and doesn't help the victims either; he looks only slightly fascinated.

A forgotten film that nonetheless truly belongs among the highlights of the Neue Deutsche Autoren Cinema. This debut film by Volker Schlöndorff offers a brilliant analysis of the sadistic side of humanity and the judging of good and evil. That this analysis is at times deeply moving can be seen, for instance, in the terrifying gym scene. There are few films in which humiliation is made so palpable to the audience as in this one. Furthermore, the acting is exceptional, and the shadowy scenes in the boys' hideout are brimming with tension. An overlooked masterpiece.

Mac Hammer Fan and Drs. DAJA sum it up perfectly. I saw this film for the second time and it captivated me just as much as it did back then. Film hasn't lost any of its power, either. Robert von Musil wrote this story in 1906 (!) and it is about power. The power of an individual and the power of a group. But of particular importance is the young Törless's analysis at the end of the film of what he has seen and experienced. There is no right or wrong. Good people can do terrible things. What that would lead to became apparent three decades later.
