No, this didn't do it for me.

It is an atmospheric, beautifully shot film with a special choice of music, and the first half still has some sharp dialogues.

But other than that it just didn't bother me enough. I can still imagine where the director wants to go, but in my opinion it just doesn't come out well. Scenes and things that were probably intended to be very spectacular I found quite anticlimactic. Hoffman isn't convincing as a charismatic cult leader (rather, rather, a rather sad person) and Freddie is one of the nastiest and least developing characters in recent movie history. I also found the way Phoenix plays him anything but special; both actor and character only aroused enormous annoyance.

So...I'd like to give this movie some credit because it's something different, but I thought it was a rather pointless and unconvincing exercise

A traumatized soldier has to figure it out for himself after the war. Then he meets someone who, through a therapy, can let someone go back in time in order to be able to influence the present from there. The film is mainly about the relationship that develops between the charismatic leader and the loyal unstable follower. And that happens in a very beautiful way at a slow pace, but in such a way that it all remains fascinating. The last scene is very significant. It asks the viewer whether the follower has actually learned something from his master or whether the therapy in the end was not that much and that it is more of a trick to build a lasting relationship.[/ spoiler] Probably the latter. Great movie!

"If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you? For you'd be the first person in the history of the world."

Remains a very fine film; which I will reward with the full score from now on.

The stratification means that every revision can be on a different line (eg, from a characterization of cult life, through the mirrored personalities of Quell and Dodd, and the wandering veteran desperate for security, to the tragic inevitability of serving a - any - master, and whatever else I may discover..). The good thing is that Anderson does not impose anything on the viewer. The clever cinematography, the slow pace and the convincing acting, round it off beautifully. Almost every notable aspect is dripping with quality. For me, this work symbolizes the pleasure of watching a film.
