Half of a Yellow Sun plot
Olanna and Kainene are glamorous twins from a wealthy Nigerian family. After their expensive English studies, they return to a privileged life in the city in the newly dependent Nigeria of the 1960s. However, they both go their own way. Olanna shocks her family when she moves in with her lover, the revolutionary professor Odenigbo and his devoted sidekick Ugwu, in the dusty university town of Nsukka. Kainene becomes a successful businesswoman when she takes over the family's interests and falls in love with the English writer Richard. However, they become entangled in the events of the Nigerian Civil War, in which the Igbo people engage in a passionate struggle for the independent Republic of Biafra.
