The Ring plot
"Two boxers compete for the love of a woman."
Professional boxer Bob Corby falls head over heels in love with the ticket seller of a boxing attraction during a visit to a funfair. However, the girl in turn is friends with "One-Round" Jack Sander, who challenges visitors to a fight he's never lost. But when he faces Bob, encouraged by the girl, Jack threatens to throw in the towel for the first time.

Mediocre Hitchcock. I still had a box like that in my closet with all kinds of old Hitch films, including a whole host of silent films. It's about time to grab it, but I hope this won't be a harbinger for the rest. Occasionally quite beautifully filmed with occasional special shots, something that Sir Alfred often showed, also in his later films. In addition, the man is visually oriented anyway and knows how to tell his story clearly with few intertitles. But the whole thing is also just a very boring dragon that never managed to interest me and actually bored me all the time. Not in terms of content, but the film also seemed to take forever. This is partly due to the fact that I don't think silent films are really suitable for drama anyway, and partly due to the unremarkable story. 1.5*.

For his first film for British International, Hitchcock was given a larger budget and the freedom to co-write the screenplay with his wife Alma Reville for this intelligently written and highly entertaining romantic drama about two boxers, played by Charles Brisson and Ian Hunter, who both as outside the (boxing) ring competing for the affection of Mabel [Lillian Hall-Davis], who cunningly plays both men. Full of visual symbolism, beautiful shots and with a pleasant sense of humor. The boxing matches are certainly not badly staged!

Hitchcock's first film for the new company British International Pictures. At that point he had already made a name for himself and, at the age of 28, was even the highest paid director in Great Britain. It is also his first collaboration with Jack E. Cox as cameraman/DOP with whom he will make ten films.
The Ring is not a thriller but an action/romantic drama. Hitchcock is clearly also a master of his craft in the era of silent films. The Ring contains a lot of visual candy and fun shots. That of course makes the difference between an average silent and a good silent. One of the highlights is the boxing match in Royal Albert Hall, which has been modified in terms of location thanks to the Schüfftan effect that Fritz Lang had previously used in Metropolis. The story of The Ring is simple enough to be understandable with a minimum number of intertitles. The play of images and symbolism with the ring in different meanings gives it a sophisticated touch. Successful. And I'm talking about the restored longer version that I saw.
