Definitely one of the very best "Laurel and Hardy" movies. Cakes are not thrown there, but for the rest a whole series of classic gags is discussed with funny misunderstandings, but it is not just a string of all their antics from their earlier short films. There is something more to it, if only the sympathetic theme of the honest, innocent man, initially deceived, but ultimately experiencing justice.

The film has been beautifully restored and should never be lost. He is characteristic of the laughter in that period of film history.

Wonderfully comical duo, the jokes fly around your ears, the dance between the 2 is of a high level! The Nostalgic music also fits perfectly into the picture. L&H in a the-west setting guarantees an hour of entertainment!

The strength of this comedy lies mainly in the signature of its two main characters. Laurel and Gardy are, of course, some of the best-known and most impressive figures in cinema history. Put both gentlemen in the center of a film and you will soon have a successful comedy.

It does not matter much whether the story is well put together and whether the subordinate roles are strongly filled or not. In this film, the side characters are rightfully side characters and the story is not startling. And that doesn't matter at all for the comic quality. The film is purely based on the duo's comic presence.

Laurel and Hardy master every scene. The other characters are subservient to the duo's comic antics. And that works wonderfully. Every situation and every small incident are wonderfully exploited with a lot of accompanying commotion. Way Out West is a delightful accumulation of scenes full of slapstick. Laurel and Hardy are at their best.

So a great comedy. At the same time, the film is not a great technical product. The scenes are roughly stitched together. The cuts are abrupt. The editing is poorly done. It is also not good on the verbal level. The dialogues are very weak. Only a single verbal joke catches on.

So it's simply the presence of two rock-solid characters and their rock-solid interplay that makes the film the fantastic comedy it is, despite its weaknesses. The timing, the gestures, the exclamations and the virtuoso slapstick make the film something special. Something classic.
