The film is decent, but nothing more than that. I find the story particularly bizarre. What a strange combination: a half-homeless street fighter befriends a disabled killer whale instructor. What bothered me the most about the film was the lack of depth of the characters. Ali has a child from a broken relationship and is wandering around France. No background, no info, hardly anything. He can go to his sister, but the meeting is anything but cordial. Why?
He then works as a bouncer in a dance club and comes into contact with Stéphanie after an incident. The reason she's there, her background, extra info. You get to see very little of it. It turns out they live together, but After her accident she lives alone again. Furthermore, life as a disabled person is presented in the film: the difficulties, the shame of not daring to go outside, sexual needs, etc ... Yet this too is explored too little and the film remains on the plain. The same with the sexual relationship between the two: her motives are known, but his? Why? Out of compassion? Out of love (unlikely)? Little emotion, little empathy ... the viewer has to see it from a distance.

Do not get me wrong. The film is quite ok, but is safe and good. Also here and there some plot holes and film realism instead of real reality. Ali takes off again towards the end, but after the accident of his son he contacts Stéphanie again. That the ending apparently produces a happy ending, well, allow me not to take this seriously. That ice scene, by the way, was horrifying.

There is little to be said for the acting. Schoenaerts once again proves why he is one of the best (international) actors we have. And Cotillard also did very well. The atmosphere, moments of rest and music were good. The storyline itself could have been a little better.

Seen for the 2nd time. Saw it years ago but didn't remember much about it. What struck me in particular was the selfish behavior of the protagonist. If this was the intention, then it worked well. He has a son but doesn't care at all. He dumps it with his sister so she can take care of it while she and her partner work. He helps out with illegal odd jobs that even get his sister fired. The disabled trainer thinks to build a relationship with him but he 'fucks' every woman he meets and thinks this is the most normal thing in the world and when he has screwed up the whole thing he flees and leaves everything and everyone behind. The only thing that interests him is boxing... and at the end of the film he wins something with this and everyone he has left is cheering him on.... well...

Due to lack of money, Alain [Matthias Schoenaerts] travels with his son [Armand Verdure] from Belgium to France to move in with his sister and make a new start there. He finds work as a bouncer in a nightclub. One evening he meets Stéphanie [Marion Cotillard] who was involved in a fight. He gives her his phone number, but the two don't get back in touch until after a horrific accident. Then a complex, intense relationship develops between two souls marked by life. A moody psychological drama with an appealing cast and some moments you won't soon forget (Stéphanie's reunion with the orca she trained is a highlight), but Alain is a repulsive character and Audiard does not provide enough insight into the reasons for Alain's aggressive and irresponsible behavior . Lots of sex, lots of violence, but nothing to get emotionally involved in the fate of the main characters.
