What Maisie Knew plot

"Based on the novel by Henry James"

Seven-year-old Maisie is the plaything in a custody battle between her mother Susanna, a longtime rock star, and her father Beale, a major art dealer. In an effort to win the custody battle, Beale marries Maisie's nanny Margo, and Susanne, in turn, marries local bartender Lincoln. In this way, Margo and Lincoln are forced to become part of this mutual feud and develop sympathy for Maisie's position, and ultimately for each other.

“I'm her... sorta... like... Maisie's stepfather.”

It's interesting to watch Like Father, Like Son and What Maisie Knew one after the other (which I did). Both films show how important a stable family situation and a good upbringing are for a child, and that the biological parents cannot always take care of this. Susanna and Beale are terrible parents and clearly cannot/will not take care of their child, but of course they are still Maisie's parents. Organic and legal.

Emotionally and maybe psychologically it's different, and Lincoln and Margo can clearly take much better care of Maisie. What the future holds for Maisie remains uncertain (legal battle, move to London, separation anxiety), but for now you just hope she enjoys the moments on the beach and on the boat will cherish. What Maisie Knew is a harrowing but also hopeful film with great acting by Moore, Skarsgard, Vanderham and the disarmed Onata Aprile.

What Maisie Knew is a strong drama film that I watched with great fascination and amazement. On the one hand you have the divorce between Susanna and Beale who can't figure out who should get custody of little Maisie, let alone that clear agreements can be made. Maisie undergoes it all and has to hear many curses from/about her father or mother. On the other hand, Maisie becomes a plaything for their whims and gets dumped inappropriately (and above all) inappropriately like a piece of dirt with one or the other. And Maisie goes through it all. Her loyalty to her parents is logically great, but towards the end she begins to realize more and more how things are going.

It becomes extra complex (and bizarre) when both parents use their nanny as a surrogate parent. Pretty easy right? They are also repeatedly presented with fait accomplis and have to deal creatively with Maisie's presence. Both are in the same boat and grow towards each other. The drama content then makes more room for a romantic film of a happy family. The structure of the film is very good and it never gets too sentimental. I thought the ending was rather quick, but the attitude of the biological parents spoke volumes. It was painful even when you saw some of the actions of the biological parents. The respect was hard to find: firstly to Maisie herself, but also to each other or both surrogate parents.

The acting was also good. Little Onata Aprile certainly did a great job as Maisie and Julianne Moore was a lovely b*tch, but Steve Coogan wasn't much better. Nice role for Skarsgard too. In short, a very successful film that makes you think about having children and taking on your responsibilities. Nice 4.0*.

Brilliant adaptation of Henry James's 1897 classic of the same name about the divorce of rock singer Susanne [Julianne Moore] and art dealer Beale [Steve Coogan], told from the perspective of their daughter Maisie [Onata Aprile] who is never fully aware of what's going on. exactly what's going on and the way both parents (especially her mother) try to win her favor. The confusion only grows when Beale remarries Maisie's babysitter [Joanna Vanderham] and Susanne remarries bartender Lincoln [Alexander Skarsgård]. The adult cast does a great job, but what makes this heartbreaking divorce drama so special is Aprile's disarming, and utterly compelling, acting, a masterclass in natural acting in front of the camera. But where a child plays the adults off the screen, much credit must go to directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel, who clearly went above and beyond to create an atmosphere on set in which the entire cast excels and Aprile's mother and acting coach Valentine Aprile. You will not easily find a better film about the experience of children and this should be a must for every couple who cherishes a child.
