Drizzly drama about the friendship between a number of famous writers, including Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, and the strange attraction that the troubled Lucien Carr (Dane DeHaan) has on them. We are apparently supposed to be interested in these characters because they represent well-known figures, but the film fails to convince, and neither do the actors involved. Bland, flat and quite boring.

Ambitious debut film from American director John Krokidas, starring Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe.

This biography is about how three American writers and poets, namely Allen Ginsberg (Daniel Radcliffe), Jack Kerouac (Jack Huston) and William Burroughs (Ben Foster), meet in the 1940s and how Beat poet Allen Ginsberg falls in love with a fellow student at Columbia University, who will introduce him to a world full of jazz, drugs, alcohol and ...

The fearless Daniel Radcliffe continues to prove that he is an actor first and not Harry Potter, by taking on some pretty tough roles. In this film, that means not only an American accent for him, but also equally believable nude scenes with another man, namely the mysterious muse Dane DeHaan (in the role of Lucien Carr), who is also ideally cast). The cast plays well, by the way, and it was also nice that "good old" Jennifer Jason Leigh (in the role of Allen Ginsberg) and the talented Elizabeth Olsen (in the role of Edie Parker) also had a part in the story.

Fans of the literary trio will relish it, the rest of the world (like me) won't care so much and will also be glad that the film only lasted about 90 minutes.

On August 13, 1944, 31-year-old janitor David Kammerer [Michael C. Hall] was murdered by 19-year-old Lucien Carr [Dane DeHaan], a Columbia University student who had been a close friend of William Burroughs [Ben Foster] for years and who had befriended Allen Ginsberg [Daniel Radcliffe] and Jack Kerouac [Jack Huston], who became leading voices of The Beat Generation, during their studies. This reconstruction of the events leading up to this murder offers a vivid picture of the culture at the University and in New York and the way Carr, Burroughs, Ginsberg, and Kerouac influenced each other, and is one of the films in which Radcliffe convincingly distances himself from his Harry Potter image, although he does still wear glasses here.
