Based on the novel 'Event 1000' by David Lavallee. Charlton Heston is Captain Paul Blanchard who causes a collision on his last trip with the nuclear submarine 'Neptune' and sinks to 483 meters below NAP. Coincidentally, the quirky Captain Gates (Carradine) has just designed a handy submarine to facilitate the rescue.

A decent film in which a submarine sinks after colliding with another boat. A solid disaster film that focuses primarily on the rescue attempt (which, incidentally, is well-shot). It might not be truly thrilling, but the film remains entertaining. It features quite a few familiar names, with Christopher Reeve making his debut.

A latecomer to the seventies disaster movie trend. Heston had even made it his new specialty, after his previous specialty (historical epic films) had gone rather out of fashion in the 70s. It results in a Heston who is almost subtle by his standards. Although he is still the actor with the most old-fashioned style here. It is also part of the package, actors making a comeback from the heyday of Hollywood and the disaster movie.
This film featured Keach and Carradine as the biggest young names. The latter, in particular, makes Gates quite strongly the disaster movie archetype of the rebellious young man who turns out to be right. The film otherwise contains everything you expect from such a film; it is solid, well-made, a nice snapshot of the era, and quite suspenseful, but also very predictable.

Around the time this film came out in theaters, I sometimes went to the movies with my father—my mother would go shopping in Rotterdam, so I would go to the movies with Dad. And I had decided I wanted to see this one, but for a reason I can no longer recall, it didn't work out—maybe something to do with the film rating, or were the tickets sold out? Anyway, we ended up at Airport '77. An even sadder film than this one already. Why I wanted to go here is really no longer clear to me.
The cast is quite extensive, which is a plus – although with the best will in the world I cannot really be impressed by their acting performances. And the setting in a nuclear submarine, but judging by the looks of it, it could also largely be an office building. But worse, the story seems to be primarily a commercial for the DSRV – perhaps the military-industrial complex needed money for that.
The bar isn't set very high for a disaster movie to begin with, but this submarine dive film happily sails even lower. Lately, we sometimes complain about the pathetic stuff coming out of Hollywood and Netflixland, but things weren't all perfect in the past either, and this monstrosity proves that once again.
