Excision plot

"Heal The Sickness"

Pauline is not your typical teenager. She picks scabs, dissects dead animals and fantasizes about performing surgery on strangers. However, her fascinations disrupt the relationship with her parents and her classmates. Pauline has a special disdain for the Church and her "therapist" the Rev. William, who she deems in no position to judge or indulge in her psychosexual fantasies. No one understands Pauline except her younger sister who suffers from cystic fibrosis. When she is suspended from school, the madness really sets in.

Wonderful movie.

Pauline is the perfect inscrutable teenager, with a deadly combination of a sort of autistic intelligence, an unabashed empowerment and an unstoppable fascination for the macabre, yet she manages to win the sympathy of the viewer.

Her rebelliousness is repeatedly met with resistance from her classmates, teachers, principal and, of course, her possessed conformist mother. No one really gets to grips with her, although she has a special bond with her sister Grace.

She has hilarious conversations with God, who challengingly asks for guidance. At night, her dream images consist of performance art fantasies drenched in blood. During the day she mainly has to endure the civil conversations at the dinner table.

McCord is magnificent as Pauline. A tad older than her intended age, but with enough indifference in her eyes, curvy demeanor and mannerisms, she perfectly manages to measure that youthful arrogance that makes her equally irritating and irresistible.

Thoroughly enjoyed. Strong episodic narrative that ultimately surprises with direction. Black humor that rivals Miranda July and Todd Solondz and adds a bloody sauce over it. Could have been a bit more exuberant or sharper here and there, but this is - certainly for a debut - an extremely entertaining film. Thick 4*

Another re-watch and it was necessary, because it was already far away. AnnaLynne McCord puts down a strong role here, she thought it was quite disgusting, even though it is not a misse by nature, so quite strong to make it appear completely different in this film.

Roger Bart, who plays the vafer here, I keep linking with Hostel II. Throughout the film there is a wonderful (self)destructive and sometimes bizarre atmosphere that I do like. A not optimal family situation, that's the least you can say here. Nice and captivating film and its rewatch more than necessary and worth it.

Adolescent Pauline [AnnaLynne McCord] wants to study medicine in the hopes of saving her sister who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, but also has to deal with sexual feelings. In addition, she has to contend with an extremely demanding mother [Traci Lords]. This confusion causes bizarre dreams and fantasies that only reinforce her already often bizarre behavior. This black comedy quickly feels like a repetition of moves. The screenplay bumps from macabre fantasy to an altercation with mother and an awkward moment at school until finally to the gruesome, but unfortunately not too shocking ending. The supporting roles of John Waters, Malcolm McDowell and Ray Wise might make this interesting for cult lovers, with the emphasis on maybe.
